High School EV Challenge

Building The Next Generation EV’s!

(Revised for clarity and omissions - March 30, 2024)

Overview

The main purpose of providing this competition is to elevate interest in EV technology... especially for young Canadians who will soon be entering the workforce and must make thoughtful decisions about their role in future society.

It is hoped that this competition will also foster growth, or new interest in the following areas:

    • Engineering Skills - both mechanical and electrical.

    • Critical Thinking and Organizational Skills – in this case, logically sorting through diverse engineering, vehicle performance and safety concerns in a productive fashion, with the goal of creating the best-performing EV vehicle with limited time and resources.

    • Creative Solutions – Untried techniques that may produce a new solution to an old engineering problem.

    • Teamwork – realizing the benefits of a communal effort toward a common goal.

    • Focused on design and engineering EV’s

Participating schools will be provided most of the key components required for the construction of each competing EV: a driver's seat, seat belts, brake system components, steering system components, electric drive motor, batteries, system controller and display... etc.

To foster personal growth and the learning of new skills, we have deliberately omitted explicit instructions on vehicle construction and do not provide certain components such as the vehicle chassis.

Additionally, EDISON MOTORS Staff will only provide participants with basic design and engineering advice for their builds and only on a limited basis.

The capability of each vehicle entered must primarily be the result of the creativity and engineering talent of the participating students.

The Competition

When and Where:

Competition will take place in Merritt BC, on May 25, 2024 at the MERRITT RODEO GROUNDS (Nicola Valley Rodeo Association). Event will start at 10:00 AM (rain or shine).

Qualification:

All participants must arrive at the competition location before the first event in order to register and have their vehicle safety inspected by the EDISON Safety team.

Vehicles that do not receive a passing grade during inspection will be permitted up to 60 minutes to make any necessary changes to the vehicle in order to secure a passing grade. Vehicles that are not safe to drive will not be allowed to drive in the event.

Competition Events:

Teams will compete in a series of 3 events:

    • Race - Fastest recorded time on a straight course.

    • Tractor Pull - Highest recorded weight-pulling capability.

    • Obstacle Course Race - Fastest recorded lap time on a winding, soft-terrain course.

Bonus points will be awarded to the coolest looking EV!

Prizes:

The winning team of each event will receive a $500 scholarship prize.

The team winning the most events will receive a $1,500 scholarship prize.

Additionally, the leader of the winning team will be offered a paid summer position at EDISON MOTORS to further expand the recipient’s EV fabrication and engineering skills!

Rules:

All team members must be current students or faculty of the participating school.

All participating EV's must be safe to operate and must include the following minimally required design attributes and equipment in order to qualify for participation in the challenge:

    1. All teams must keep the vehicle’s primary maximum operating voltage at-or-under 78 volts DC.

    2. Commercially made, properly installed seat belts and crash helmets (both in undamaged condition) must be worn at all times by EV operators when the vehicle is in motion.

    3. Any chassis design determined by the EDISON Safety Team not to be sufficiently structurally sound will be disqualified from competition.

    4. The vehicle must not possess any dangerous metal protrusions that could injure other EV drivers or nearby observers.

    5. Adequate and fully operational brakes.

    6. Fully insulated and mechanically secure electrical connections throughout the vehicle.

    7. Proper installation of the provided main battery cutoff switch and circuit breakers.

    8. All vehicle electrical wiring must be of a suitable gage that meets or exceeds its expected load requirement for each application.

    9. Properly assembled and functional steering system.

  • EV's that do not meet the above mentioned requirements, or any other vehicle condition observed on competition day that is deemed unsafe by the EDISON Safety Teem will, unfortunately, result in disqualification.

Liability:

Qualifying Entrants will be required to sign a liability waiver.
